Alice G Patterson Photography {blog} bio picture

alice {girl vs. grown up}

By now, you have most likely concluded that I am a wedding and lifestyle portrait photographer.  Here is what you probably don't know:

In addition to (or maybe instead of) my photographer persona, most of my neighbors recognize me as the lady being pulled around town by my three dogs (or as I like to call them "the girls").  Ironically, I still think of myself as a girl, but really I'm a grown woman.

In addition to being creative, running my business has lots of grown up responsibilities that I happily greet on a daily basis.  When I have a shoot, I arrive early, with back up equipment, a second photographer, and over fifteen years of experience.  But the minute I start taking pictures, I suddenly personify my absolute favorite part of the job... I become a girl with a camera.

The girl in me remains enthusiastic, creative, warm, and ever enchanted with sharing photographs.  The grown up is experienced, professional, and reliable.  So over the many years of being self-employed, I've learned that the whole girl vs. grown up is not a contest. Rather, it is a rare combination that makes me uniquely talented in photographing life's big events and little moments.

p.s.

My sister wants me to tell you that I'm a graduate of Brooks Institute of Photography located in Santa Barbara, CA.  From there, I went on to build my wedding and portrait business in San Francisco and Los Angeles.  Currently, I'm finding my latest niche in the amazing state of New York!

Thank you for coming by.  I hope to hear from you soon!

heart {no. 7}

These images come from Julie and Rick’s engagement portrait session last summer.  I followed them along as they picked blueberries, which they used to make homemade blueberry jam for their wedding favors.  They were so nice to send me a jar.  I thought I would make a nice Marthaesque picture of the jam, but instead I just ate it all up.  I had never been blueberry picking before, and I was amazed at how delicious they were right of the vine…

When I spied a nearby picnic table at the blueberry farm, I knew exactly what I was going to do next.  Although at the time, I had no idea it would someday be referred to as heart number seven…

heart {no. 6}

Heart number six is in honor of my new friend Clayton Austin who is visiting this weekend, all the way from Texas!  In addition to being the speaker at our CNY PUG meeting on Monday, Clayton also flew all this way so he could photograph some portraits in the snow here.  With that in mind, I present heart number six…

heart {no. 5}

Don’t forget I’m a newbie at this blog challenge business, but hang in there with me.  Today’s entry is a little different from the rest.  Instead of making a heart, Beth my sister “found” a heart.  Kind of like when you’re laying on a blanket looking up at a summer sky and you see a shape in the clouds that reminds of you something…. only this time it was a winter day,  (about  20 frickin’ degrees outside), we were standing up, and Beth pointed out the heart shape in one of the old magnificent trees in her yard.  She and I both thought “that’s no. 5.”

Here is a recent pic of my amazing sister Beth.  She is rocking her new everyday casual but oh so glamorous winter coat and a lovely new “do” by our friend Krista at Lavish Hair Salon…

Thanks for all that you do Beth!  xoxo

Besso and Giovanni - Great hair style Beth and you know I'm a sucker for an abstract heart found in nature.

Beth - Love is everywhere :)

Noelle - Excellent heart - and great update on your studio manager <3

heart {no. 4}

If you are new to the blog, I’m in the midst of my first personal blog challenge.  I’m posting a heart a day for the first fourteen days of February just for a little bit of Valentines Day fun.

So here is heart number 4.  It’s another example of Michelle and I having fun making hearts during a wedding day session.  Michelle did an excellent job drawing this perfect heart, in the sand, at Megan and Ernie’s beautiful Santa Barbara wedding…

Scroll down to January 27th’s post to see another heart portrait from this series used as the cover photo for the wedding album!

Meredith Perdue - This is a great image- I love this idea, Alice!

alice - Hi Lindsay, Thanks for coming by. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but it took me a little while to figure out your little message was a heart... guess I'm not quite as cutting edge as I imagine myself to be. xoxo

Lindsay - <3

heart {no. 3}

I dipped into the archives tonight to bring you heart number three in the 14 hearts blog challenge, but this one is worth repeating.

Karina and Bruno had an amazing wedding at the Figueroa Hotel in Los Angeles famous for it’s Moroccan flair and the Blue Door.  Here is a little fun my second shooters Sonia and Michelle had at the end of the night…

laure - Erica and I trying doing that one night! We had the wrong kind of flashlight!!! Very cool!

Beth - That is really cool!

february snapshots! {babies}

heart {no. 2}

Seeing as I am a photographer, and this is my blog, it is perfectly acceptable for you to assume that I am going to post another photograph with a heart in it for day two of my 14 hearts blog challenge.  Well look out!  This is a curve ball post, as I just have to include this gem of a heart.

Love this drawing of my dog lulu accompanied with the sweetest little love message from Besso.   I’ve got a file specifically designated for Besso treasures.  Besso is 11 now, but this drawing was made when she around 7 or 8.  I love everything about this drawing, but some of my favorite points are Lulu’s party hat, collar, and the attention to detail put into Lulu’s hairy moles, I mean beauty marks.  So stinkin’ cute…

Besso, I’ll treasure this forever!  xoxo, Alice

Noelle - I love the party hat the best.... it's a lovely drawing.... and perfect example of hearts in art!

Besso and Giovanni - What an accurate portrait of Lulu and the love Besso has for you!

Beth - I love the drawing, the artist, and that you've got your own file dedicated to Besso's treasures!!

heart {no. 1}

I’ve heard people complain about holidays, saying that they don’t “believe” in them.  That we should all just treat our loved ones special everyday.  Well, who can really argue about treating each other special everyday?  Not me.   Yet, while Valentines Day has been notoriously called a Hallmark holiday, I still like it.  In fact, I pretty much love all of the holidays.  I think it’s fun when someone makes that extra effort to send a valentines to a friend, lover, and/or family… even better if that someone has an ounce of creativity in them.  So yes, give the love out daily, but if you have it in you, add a little Valentines fun into your life.

All that being said, I’ve created my first blog challenge.  This is going to be tough because I’ve never blogged on a daily basis, but I’m going to make an effort to post a heart {of some sort} a day, for the next 14 days… you know, until it is Valentines Day. Lucky for me, I took a lot of pictures of the cupcakes we used for the January’s Snapshots! session. Please enjoy heart no. 1…

If you are a photographer/ blogger, and want to play along… leave a comment and let us know about your own heart a day challenge.

alice - Andy, that is hilarious! I think you and Carrie did eat that cupcake.

Andy - I think I ate that cupcake!

Laura - Too cute!

new album product {photobook plus}

I recently heard another photographer say “It is not only our job to make beautiful images for our clients, but to also guide them through to the end of the experience… the end being the final destination for the photography.”

When properly done, an album will tell your story.  You can pull it off a shelf, and instantly relive those memories all over again.   Photos in a box randomly tucked away often get lost or damaged.  A slide show on dvd and/or a video will tell your story, but who knows when technology will change, making that dvd/video obsolete?  And really, isn’t it just sooooo much better sharing on the couch, rather than having everyone crowd around the computer?   Wedding albums often become one’s most treasured heirloom.

I always tell my wedding clients… after the cake is eaten, the flowers wilt, your guests go home, and the dress is packed away, the photos remain ever vigilant in telling your story.

As luck should have it my newest sample album has just arrived, so I took some photos to help illustrate this important message to you.  Allow me to introduce you to the Photobook Plus.  My sample features a leather spine and back, combined with a photo cover (but it also has three other cover options, and loads of leather colors and textures to choose from).  Is it wrong to use the word yummy here?  How about gaga?  Yes, I’m definitely gaga for this album…

This is a 12 x 12 inch album, but it also comes in 10×10, with a variety of cover choices. By the way, all of my wedding clients are now eligible for a free album design.

When I showed this album to a new client, she commented on nicely it opens up, so you can actually see the whole spread.  I, of course, totally agree with her!

Since I always photograph both in color and black & white, I love finding the perfect balance of these images when creating an album design.  Also, playing with size and isolating certain images, really allows me to highlight key moments of the story.  Check out this gorgeous panoramic from Megan and Ernie’s ceremony.   Loving it…

On a side note, could there be a more beautiful setting for this vintage Rolls Royce?  How many times can I say I love this?  Apparently, it’s a lot, because I love, love, love every page of this album…

Oh and if you are one of my portrait clients… look out because I’ll be posting some super fun sample albums for you in the near future.

Marianne Lozano - looks great Alice!

laure - Love, love, love this album!

Cathy - My wedding album is the BEST money I spent for my wedding. Fifteen years later, we still take it out and look at it. The kids are fascinated by it too.

Beth - The quality of the album paper and binding is wonderful, combined with your design and gorgeous images, its divine!

Noelle - This is fabulous - I love how the images are not constrained to one page. And the double page spread - it reminds me of Life magazine - uber professional and memorable.....

the nelsons {just a peek}

Have you ever thought about doing a portrait session in the winter?  If not, I think you should!  While the flowers of spring, grass of summer, and colors of autumn are all beautiful, I have to say I do love me a wintry scene.

With this in mind, I’m happy to share with you a quick peek from my recent portrait session with the Nelsons.  Love this shot…

Thanks guys!!  xoxo

carrie + andy {slideshow}

Absolutely loving the new trend in stop motion messages. Carrie’s and Andy’s Valentines Day themed portrait session, gave me the perfect opportunity to give it a try for myself.

These two are so cute, and I couldn’t be happier with this fun little valentine message…

The creative possibilities for this type of fun stop motion message are endless.  Give me a ring, if you would like to  make one with your loved one(s).

Biggest Sister : ) - Very nice : ).

Lindsay - Love it!

Noelle - Ohhhhh - I love it! It is retro and new at the same time....

thank you {kubota images}

Last night was our monthly CNY PUG (Pictage User Group) meeting for professional photographers!  Unfortunately a few of our members couldn’t make it due to little life events, like oh going to have a baby any day now, dogs in surgery, sick kids, and jetting off to Florida… you know who you are :)   Luckily for the rest of us, it was a super informative meeting as well as being loads of fun… oh hello Dash Riprock.   We wanted to give a big GIANT THANK YOU to Kevin Kubota and the amazing PR Princess Wendi at Kubota Images for donating our fantastic door prize.  The uber fab Laure Lillie was this month’s door prize winner, and the rest of us are delighted with our coupons.  As you can clearly see below…

A big thank you to everyone for making those long wintery drives to be here last night!  xoxo, Alice

Feuza - Thats so cool, where is this pug huh? :-)

laure - Yes, but I got theee golden ticket! Just like in Willy Wonka!!! I am beyond thrilled! Until the next episode!

alice - Thanks guys... my sister Beth (aka best studio manager evah!) and I put a lot of thought and outreach to for these awesome door prizes. I'm happy to say though, that I think everyone is walking away a winner, due to the great community found in these meetings. Pictage is a huge leader in the philosophy of building supportive communities amongst professional photographers; and we are so happy to be leading this group!

Beth - Thanks Wendi and Kubota Images!

Chrissy - Don't know how you manage to get such rockin prizes! Great job and what a lucky group!

Mike - Someone went home happy!

valentines inspiration from {julia child}

Last fall I went to see the film Julie & Julia, which I thoroughly enjoyed.  First off, I think Meryl Streep is the most amazing actress ever!  I saw her perform in a play at UCLA a few years back.  It was a very civilized audience, but I wanted to jump up and down like I was at a rock concert, because that is how I see Ms. Streep… ROCK STAR!  Sorry, this really is supposed to be about Julia Child. If you are not familiar with the film, the Julia part of the title is based on the rich (and by rich I mean buttery rich) life of Julia Child, played by the aforementioned rock star actress who will go unnamed so I can stay focused.  Apparently Julia and husband Paul loved Valentines Day! So much so, they made homemade Valentines Day cards to mail to all of their friends and family.  I find this extremely endearing…

So if you want to have some fun next month, and send out some custom photo Valentines Day cards, you should seriously consider booking a session on Saturday January 16th as part of my new Snapshots!  series…. yep the photos are going to have a Valentines Day theme.    Here are a couple examples of custom photo cards that I made from my session with the oh so adorable Carrie and Andy!

Nothing says love, like heart shaped cookies…

Amanda - I love this idea! . I rarely get my butt in gear to get xmas cards out, and this seems like more fun. :)

Meredith Perdue - This is an exceptionally cute idea! I especially love it because I just saw Julie & Julia last week- great film! Good luck with this fun promo, Alice!

Michael Nesmith - What a great Idea!

alice - Thank you Ladies :)

Noelle - Buttery!!! And lovely!!!! Both your work and the story....

Mindy - cute idea

introducing {snapshots!}

Nanci - Is this offer available offsite? I would like to schedule a session for my family.

Abby - I think this is a great idea! I can't wait for July to see all the creative spirit!

Noelle - This rocks! I'll need to get an appt during a period of more temperate (warmer) weather.....

celebrating life {and a happy new year}

Until it happened to me, I just didn’t know how quickly and drastically one’s life can change from one second to the next.

Many of you know that I relocated to central New York from California, just about two years ago.  What you may not know is that I spent the majority of 2008, recovering from a long-but-thankfully-temporary disability… which was the result of a crazy fall on some icy stairs.  Now, when I say I fell on some icy steps, that doesn’t sound like too big of a deal… but it was.  No, these were not big or steep stairs.  Just four small wooden steps from a porch, but the ice, oh the ice was mean.   I took one step, and flew up in the air, what felt to me like a mile high.  Somehow my body twisted and I landed on my side.  My upper left arm literally smashed against the  hard edge of one of the stairs, and broke into five pieces… big pain!   My sister and brother-in-law brought me back inside, where I cried and screamed until the ambulance arrived.  The tears and screaming did stop briefly when one of the EMTs suggested that they cut my beautiful blue plaid wool coat off of me.  A coat I had only worn a couple of times.  An overpriced coat that I convinced myself I could wear for many years, with a “New York, Here I Come” excitement while I was “browsing” at Fred Segal… an amazing boutique in West Hollywood.  Yes, the tears and screaming stopped, and a definitive “No” came out of me.  I must have sounded fierce, because nobody questioned that “no” was going to be me my final answer.  Suddenly EMTs and relatives alike, lifted me off the couch and gently pulled my expensive coat off of me.  They got the same answer for whatever cardigan I was wearing at the time.  The sweater wasn’t that special to me, but I figured while I’m already up, they might as well get the rest of it off.  Luckily for me I had a tank top underneath that, so there was no more cutting questions, I did not have to go to the hospital in my bra, and most importantly I could get back to my crying.  Now, in addition to having an arm that was broken into five pieces, my biggest problem turned out to be that my radial nerve (which runs from the back of our shoulders down to ours hands and thumbs) was so damaged, that I temporarily lost the use of my left hand and wrist.  I couldn’t move a finger or my wrist, nor could I feel anything below my bicep.  Earlier I said temporary, because eventually I was fortunate to have my nerve recover.  Still, temporary turned out to be the majority of  the year 2008.  Even though I had a great orthopedic surgeon, and a fantastic team of physical therapists, it still took me nine months to recover the use of my arm, wrist, hand, and thumb.  The amazingly good news, is that my body did heal quite beautifully; so just before 2009, I was able to begin working again.

So like most of you, I have big plans for 2010… a whole new decade to look forward to, but I must give a great big THANK YOU to 2009.   In 2009 I was blessed to have my health, my family & friends, and my wonderful clients who made this such an amazing year!  On top of all that, I’m really thankful I didn’t let that EMT cut my beautiful blue plaid wool coat.  I’m still wearing it keep me warm… even if it is “so 2008.”  And because every blog post is better with photos, Beth (aka sister/ studio manager) came over to snap some photos of me and said coat.  I love this first shot…

Maybe it’s because I’m always behind the camera, but I started having a lot of fun in front of it.  I decided I should do a snowball fight sequence.  Only it was just me, and my sister Beth with her camera.  So I started lobbing some snowballs towards the camera…

Then, I actually hit Beth, and got a little too close to hitting the camera.  Apparently this is the face I make when I’m surprised.  I can’t believe I’m sharing this with you…

Then I took the “story telling” directive to a whole new level.  If one is in a snowball fight, one is most likely at some point to get pelted with a snowball.  Now remember, it’s just me and Beth out there, and Beth is holding the camera…

Yes, I did just throw a snowball in my own face for the sake of a fun photo… boy, am I dork or what?

Alice - I thought of another title I could have given this post... Plaid to the Bone! Oooh my funny meter just went on the fritz.

Brittany Cho - Hi Beth and Alice! We LOVE your blog. And thanks for your sweet comment on ours. So sorry to hear of your injury. However, your narrative is priceless and your photography is lush! We recently moved from California too, I spent 12 years in LA. Crazy place :) May 2010 bring you joy and prosperity!

Ryan8kelly@hotmail.com - I second the great coat moment. I'm glad your arm is all healed, carrying those big camera's around is hard enough with a healthy arm! Happy New Years!

Mark stagi - Happy New Years to you! Thats awesome that you are healed, I wish you the best for 2010!

Nicole Glenn - Yikes! Glad you are doing better! Great coat, a 'no' was definitely in order.

Feuza - Great photo by beth on last one, holding the camera and doing snow balls, not an easy task. Wow, I can not imagine the pain and ice is so brutal, once I was waiting for some parents at my church for we had just finished a rehearsal with the kids and teens and two teens were standing by some ice, goofing off and one fell, she cut her chin so deep, had to go get stitches so I know ice is so brutal, that must of been so hard to loose the feeling of your left hand, and so glad you are doing lots better and even posing in some shots~ happy new decade!

Sara - So now you know how it feels to be a bride at an Orthodox Greek wedding!!!

laure - whoa... Happy New Year and New Decade Alice G. Meet you soon at the next PUG! Laure

Mom - So glad you saved your coat - - and even more importantly, so glad that your arm works!!! I love the photos, and love you and Beth.

Emily - Happy New Year! So glad your arm healed up, and you can use your hand again! I love your coat, too. :)

Ellen - That coat is timeless!!

Besso and Giovanni - So sorry for that awful experience but thankfully your in better health and getting back to what you do best. I love all your images and you give me inspiration!

Beth - Happy New Year!! You're so much fun!

Lindsay - the last image is my fave

Cathy - Sooo glad it was just temporary! Love the snowball fight shots! You're just too funny!

Noelle - A great post - - and I recognize that face!! Happy New Year!

merry christmas {to you}

First off, thank you so much for all of your wonderful cards, emails, and gifts… they all mean so much to me!

I had a blast putting together this year’s holiday gifts, for all of my amazing clients!  It was hard for me not to share them on my blog before today; but now that Christmas has arrived, I hope you are all enjoying your photo ornaments and cards!

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!!!  xoxo, Alice

Nick - You rock!

alice - So glad you all are enjoying them! xoxo

Chrissy - Alice, what a wonderful surprise: I will always treasure the ornament you gave me. Thanks!

Anonymous - OMG Alice, thanks for the ornament! You're the best!!!

winter semi formal {photo party}

I’ve added a new “photo booth” service as an a la carte option for my 2010 clients.  It’s brand new service, so we thought we would try it out last weekend.  My niece invited her friends over to my house for a little pre-dance photo party, before they headed out for a great night at their high school semi formal.   Beth (my sister/ studio manager) brought over a box full of super fun props.  The photo booth was a big hit with the kids, and some of the parents even joined in the fun. Contact Abby for the Event Key (password). So sit back and enjoy the preview of my new photo booth service available for weddings and events.

If you were at the party and would like to order any images, click here.

Jill (Fridlund) Alessandra - Fun- Zany- Silly- slices of cool times! Like it: photo booth :-D

Danielle - I love all of them! I was so glad we could use the photo booth, it was great fun, and they turned out so cute!

Beth - Aw! I love them all, but especially the first one!

Noelle - What fun - and a cool way to get pictures of your guests (that show personality)!

newlyweds {alma + david}

Back in early November, I had the extreme pleasure and honor of photographing Alma and David, during a photo workshop led by Kurt Gerber.  It was yet another perk of attending Pictage’s PartnerCon in New Orleans.  At the time of the photo session, Alma and David had only been married for two weeks.  They had a cowboy and indian themed wedding, and these are their actual wedding clothes.  Definitely a fun diversion from the traditional.  When you start looking at these photos there are two things that will strike you immediately.  First off, they are a drop dead gorgeous couple, and secondly it’s very clear that they are totally in love!  Here is our gentleman cowboy David…

Alma and David

And his stunning bride Alma…

Alma and DavidAlma’s eyes are strikingly beautiful…

Alma and DavidWe walked through the ever enchanted French Quarter for our photo shoot. Ahhh, the architecture and character of New Orleans…

Alma and DavidSpeaking of architecture, I love how this building became such an important compositional element in this next photo.  Love it…

Alma and DavidSometimes I see a photograph of an adult, and I feel like I get a real glimpse into what that person might have been like at age 5 or 6.  For some reason, that is totally going on in this adorable shot…

Alma and DavidMy three favorite G’s… gorgeous couple, gorgeous location, gorgeous sunlight…

Alma and DavidThese next three images hold a lot of emotional punch.  Yep, some of my new faves…

vendor introductions {meet tara hogan of ink + wit}

It’s been a long time coming, but I’m finally introducing a new segment to my blog called “vendor introductions.”  My goal is to present you with amazingly talented wedding vendors!  So without further ado, get on your happy shoes, and make the acquaintance of Tara Hogan of Ink + Wit

I first found Tara on the internet.  I was so excited to find a wedding invitation designer and graphic artist of such immense talent right here in little ol’ central New York!  So of course, I had to meet her.  Tara is not only filled to the brim with talent, but she is also beautiful from every perspective… inside, outside, you name it, she oozes awesomeness.  Here she is at her home studio…

last night’s cny pug meeting {with steve depino}

Last night was the third meeting for our Central New York Pictage User Group (PUG).  We were so thrilled to have Steve DePino drive all the way from Connecticut to speak to our group.  We’ve got a great group of core members, and also welcomed a few newcomers!

CNY_PUG_Steve_DePino_Alice_Patterson_0002Steve was really lucky to win last night’s door prize donated by super cool Shai at www.spiderholster.com.  Here is Steve gun slinging it Wyatt Earp style..

CNY_PUG_Steve_DePino_Alice_Patterson_0003What would a Central New York PUG meeting be without our mascot… my very own pug Lulu…

Rick O - So totally DePino'ish lol

lauren - Steve was a great presenter, thanks for bringing him here!

Bob Kaussner - Hi Alice! Once again, a great PUG meeting last night at your house featuring Steve DePino as the presenter extraordinaire. Also, I just looked at your imagery from the last wedding that you posted onto your blog and the images are truly spectacular! It's also most fascinating that you, our PUG leader (as in Pictage User Group for those who don't like trade-specific acronyms) has an actual Pug for a pet (and she is adorable).... Take care and thanks again!, Bob Kaussner
