saying goodbye {to winter}

Two weeks ago we had one of our larger snowfalls of the season, and in about two weeks spring will officially arrive. Right now we have clear blue skies and rising temperatures, and yet still plenty of snow is holding the ground hostage. So I’d say today is the center of a two week seasonal sandwich.

So while I anxiously await the bare ground, buds forming on trees, and a new crop of migratory birds to appear, I wanted to send winter a little parting gift of photos. Beth and I had so much fun photographing Derek and Cooper who took advantage of the big snowstorm with a super fun day of sledding…

Poor Derek got a boot full of snow on his last run of the day…

After a loads of sledding fun and climbing back up the hill, Cooper reached his tipping point…

Cooper and Derek are so lucky to have not only a brother in each other, but a best friend as well…

Several years ago, I read an interview with rocker girl Gwen Stefani. I don’t think she was pregnant yet, but she was talking about her marriage and plans for children in the near future. She asked “Really, what is more romantic than two people choosing to raise children together?” I know, I know. It can be very tiring, very messy, very unromantic on a day to day basis, but the hopeless romantic in me hopes that Gwen is right.

Some of my dearest wedding clients Piper and Jamie asked me to photograph their one year old daughter Helena. When I look at this photograph, I see romance and all kinds of love…

I think this is one of my all time favorite portraits!

Have you ever thought about doing a portrait session in the winter? If not, I think you should! While the flowers of spring, grass of summer, and colors of autumn are all beautiful, I have to say I do love me a wintry scene.

sara, owen, will, and charlotte {just a peek}

I’ve been living in Central New York for about two years now. Yesterday, however, was the first time I drove to Ithaca; and already, I can’t wait to go back. The drive was filled with amazing rural landscapes, which I hope to photograph in the springtime, if not sooner. I didn’t have time {to stop and shoot} during yesterday’s drive, because I was racing to catch the remaining sunlight hours for a portrait session with Sara’s family.

While I have some beautiful shots, of Sara and her adorable family at The Plantations of Cornell University, I could not resist posting this hilarious image today. It’s the kind of photo that is just screaming for a fun caption. My caption was going to be “Hey kids, Santa Claus is coming to town.” Can you think of one? sara and jordan {sort of}

I had a great family portrait session with Jeff and his beautiful daughters Jordan and Sara. You may remember Sara from her senior portrait session! After the shoot today, we were talking on the front porch saying our goodbyes, as they were all getting ready to head home. At some point I glance over and see Jordan playing with her hair, and making a faux mustache with it. I felt like I had just hopped into a time warp machine, and was transported (more years than I care to mention) to my own teenagehoodness. So of course, I just HAD to make a “Mustache Portrait” of the girls. I thinks it’s a hilarious image, and well suited for the night before Halloween…

lauren {a few more portraits}

Way back in July, I photographed Lauren’s senior portrait session. Here is a favorite from that shoot…

Lauren is so gorgeous and so much fun to photograph, that we went a little over the usual two hour session. By the time, we got to the school to photograph her “track” portraits, the wind was blowing us everywhere! We decided we would come back another day, when it wasn’t so windy. Great decision, I must say, because these images from our recent revisit to the track are some of my new favorites…

This is a reminiscent of my early photo years… black & white… funky wall… classic…

Stttttrrrrrreeeeeeettttttccccchhhh….

Lauren runs something called the steeple race. I don’t understand jumping over a giant hurdle into a big bank of water, but I bet it’s fun to watch. Lauren is leaning on the hurdle in this next shot…

Drum roll please, no make it a marching band… I want a soundtrack for this super cute shot…

Go Bees!

greco {the gecko}

As promised, a special feature of the darling girl…Greco the Gecko…. sounds a bit like a circus introduction. Well she is certainly colorful enough for a circus…

Greco belongs to Charles who I recently photographed for his senior portrait. I was so smitten with her, I had to do some portraits of her too. I love Greco’s adorable little hand-foot juxtaposed with Charles’ thumb…

Greco is a little bit shy, but she did come and give me a sweet smile…

Gave me permission for a close up… look how cool her eyes are…

Then like a movie star asked about her personal life, Greco’s session was over, as she made a mad dash for her trailer (well in this case, it was actually a little fake stump that she calls home)…

In all seriousness, geckos require a certain body temperature, and we wanted to make sure that she didn’t get too cold. So Charles’ mom, volunteered to take her home. She was loaded up into her box…

Like a real star, this girl knows how to make an exit…

Killing me! Dead from too much critter love.

Several important transitions have gone unmarked on my blog… summer is officially over, school is in session, the senior portrait season is winding down, and football season has started. Meet Charles a 2010 senior and… a BIG Colts fan…

Whether I’m photographing weddings or portraits, I love exploring the same subject with multiple perspectives. Here is a fun black and white candid of Charles…

If you are familiar with my work, you know I love to throw in some fun processing. I love this digital action that takes inspiration from faded photographs from the 1970s.

I confess, I had a secret weapon for Charles’s photo session… I brought his beautiful girlfriend (aka my beautiful niece) Abby, along for the fun. Aaaaaa•Dooooor•Aaaaa•Bllllllllle…

Charles has those classic good looks. I think that may contribute to the timeless feel of this next shot…

Wait a minute! Charles brought along an awesome “prop”…. his beautiful gecko… Greco!

I am so enamored with Greco the gecko, that I’m going to give her own blog post in the near future. For now, I leave you with this super fun shot…

Meet Aubrey… yet another Senior Extraordinaire! Aubrey and I share a passion… we both love photography! In fact, after graduation that is what Aubrey would like to study.

I think this next shot is adorable…If you have been following my blog, you know that I love me some funky back drops. Luckily, so does Aubrey. We both thought this bridge looked super cool…

In addition to taking pictures, Aubrey is also cross country runner. I get tired just typing the words “cross country runner,” but I never get tired of taking pictures! Here is Aubrey outside a practice trail…

These next two shots are super cool because of the location. It’s called “The Wall.” When the boys team runs a race, the girls sit on top of the wall and cheer them on. Of course the boys do the same for the girls. Fun!!

I climbed up the back of the wall to get this next portrait. I’m cool like that…
